How to calculate your fuel cost in Canada

Fuel is typically the second-largest vehicle expense after insurance for most Canadian drivers. Understanding your monthly fuel cost helps you budget accurately and identify opportunities to reduce spending.

The formula is straightforward: (km/week ÷ 100) × L/100 km × price/litre = weekly cost. Multiply by 52 for annual cost, or by 52/12 for monthly cost.

Gas prices in Canada vary significantly by province. As of 2026, British Columbia and Quebec typically have the highest prices due to higher provincial fuel taxes and carbon levies. Alberta generally has the lowest prices among the larger provinces. Prices also fluctuate daily based on crude oil markets, refinery capacity, and seasonal demand.

For the most accurate estimate, use today's local gas price from a price-tracking app or your local station. The defaults in this calculator are approximate 2026 provincial averages from Natural Resources Canada monitoring data.
